Mood and Tone of Captain John Miler

Mood and tone of a scene
In the film of "Saving Private Ryan", the main protagonist is Captain John Miller; he hardly ever shows any emotion in the film for the exception of him being in battle. In one scene from the movie, Captain John Miller’s tone and mood completely changes. It is the battle of Omaha beach. In the beginning, he on a boat and he is really nervous because he has never been in a battle before. The moment the ramp drops, U.S troops are met with machine gun, artillery barrages, and land mines that are on the beach. When he survives the boat attack, he's on the beach watching the mayhem and destruction happening around him. He’s thinking about cowering in fear behind a armor plate of steel, but he overcomes his fear and continues to push forward to his objective.
His mood completely changed from being frighten to being fearless and focused. He's leading his men to their objective, so he can complete his mission.  After the battle he takes a good look at the beach where all the men gave their lives. His mood changes from being fearless to being concerned.  He’s probably thinking about “will I survive this war and being able to see my family again. In the real battle of Omaha a lot of the soldiers who survived the onslaught being to start changing. Most of the soldiers will want to go home and be afraid of war or they just man up and try to be fearless, focused, or to stay calm as possible during a critical situation.  John Miller isn’t that kind of person to be afraid in the heat of battle. He tends to fight his way out of any situation will try to complete his mission by any means possible, even if he has to make a tough choose that he will regret.

Character Analysis Rene Gaillimard

Rene Gallimard is a French diplomat who relates the story by his passionate and disastrous affair with Song Liling.  He is serving a long sentence for treason and tells his story from a jail cell in Paris France.  Gallimard falls in love with Song, whom he believes to be a woman, during his tenure as a diplomat in Beijing. Hapless and awkward, Gallimard is an unlikely candidate for the attentions of a beautiful woman. Knowing this, he treasures Song’s love, submissiveness, the feeling of masculine power, and pride it gives him. Gallimard has an attitude of benevolent condescension toward Asians, and particularly Asian women. The word condescension means an attitude of patronizing superiority. Gallimard is not arrogant or sexually aggressive, as are many of the Western men around him, but he is heavily influenced by the orientalist and imperialist ideas that pervade his culture. An orientalist is someone from the West who studies the language, culture, history, or customs of countries in eastern Asia. Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. He is particularly attached to a vision of Asian women as being modest, submissive, and unfalteringly devoted to their men. What I think of Gallimard, he is like a controlling person and will pestering you until he gets what he wants. In act 2 scene 13, He asks Song “Are you my butterfly?” Song says what are you saying?  Gallimard tells Song that he’s come for an answer and asks her a second time, are you my butterfly? Song tells him you should already know, but Gallimard wants her to say the words that she is his butterfly. Song begins to feel unsettled and then Gallimard mentions the letter that he wrote to her. In the letter Gallimard has given her his shame. Song says “stop”, then Gallimard says “Then what’s one more answer?”  Song doesn’t want to say the words until Gallimard asks her for a third time, “Are you my butterfly?” Song then gives in and says yes I am your butterfly. Finally, Gallimard got what he wanted, for Song to say “are you my butterfly.”

Compare and Contrast Saving Private Ryan

The opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, it starts off with a bunch of boats carrying thousands of U.S troops off the shores of Normandy for their top secret operation. That operation's name was Operation Overlord. Operation Overlord is when the allies try to invade the beaches of Normandy to gain a foothold in France and set up base of operations. This plan was so secret, the Germans didn't know where the allied invasion was gonna take place. By the time they knew were the invasion was gonna take place, it was already too late.
In the film of Saving Private Ryan, there's a scene where U.S soldiers arrive on Omaha beach. The moment the boats stopped and the ramps where about to drop, U.S troops were meet with gun fire. Soldiers who survived massacre on the boat had to push up the beach, and take over the German murder holes. Many soldiers were dying left and right from machine gun fire, artillery barrages, and land mines. After the battle was done they were so many casualties.
The battle of Omaha beach was the bloodiest battle that U.S troops ever had to fight in. To the veterans who survive the horror of Omaha beach called that beach by a different name. The beach's name was called "Blood Beach." The battle of Omaha beach was the one beach that U.S troops encountered very heavy resistance from German forces. U.S troops would have to cross a flat open beach under fire of machine guns, artillery barrages, land mines, and barb wires. The entire beach was like a football field, but with death and destruction all around. When the battle was over in Omaha, U.S troops had lost over 2,000 troops.
The Battle of Normandy really change the tide of the war in Europe. It forced Hitler's forces back to Germany. Allies wanted to libarate France from all German forces and push the Germans back. Not only that, hitler had to fight on two fronts, Allies forces from the west and Soviet forces from the east. That was the plan of Operation Overlord that Allies accomplish in all of warfare history.

Saving Private Ryan research

  • The movie that I have chosen to do my historical research film on is Saving Private Ryan. What this movie is about a small group of US army rangers that are given a mission to save one man named Ryan.  James Francis Ryan is his name. Tom Hanks play Captain Miller, who is the leader of his group of army rangers. He just survived the attack on D-Day and is now given an important mission to save one man and get him back home in one piece. He and his men find Ryan, but Ryan refuses to leave his platoon that is guard the last bridge into Germany.  Most of the men in captain miller’s squad die including him trying to hold the Rhine Bridge. Ryan survives and he will never forget what captain miller did for him. This movie is really historical because it has the battle of D-day when the allies invade France, trying to get a foothold in order to push the Germans back.  Another battle that takes place in this movie is the battle of the Rhine Bridge. It was very critical for the allies because it was the last bridge to cross the Rhine River that leads into Germany.
The movie that captures my attention was the battle of D-day. That was the day when the allies invade France by landed on the beaches of Normandy. The bloodiest battle in D-day was Omaha beach. A lot of veterans who fought and survive that battle call Omaha beach by a different name, that name was called “Blood beach.” D-day was also called by a different name too by the veterans of WWII; name was “The longest day.”  People who have watched this movie should care about this movie. This movie was made for the veterans who fought in World War II. And it was made to honor the men who died bravely in battle by giving their life for our country.
The scene that inspires me to write a research paper about this movie and the scene that really stands out in this movie is the D-day battle scene.  There are a lot of facts, details, and most importantly stories from veterans who fought and survive on that beach. The preparation of D-day shows how the allies manage to transport materials and supplies, and manage to fake out the Germans thinking that they would cross the English Channel from the north east. That battle is one of the most gruesome and epic battle that allies has ever won.

Captain John Miller analysis

Character Analysis

In the movie Saving Private Ryan, the main protagonist is Captain John Miller played by Tom Hanks. Captain John Miller is a U.S army ranger that is brave and doesn't like to talk about himself. There is very little that we know about John Miller. The soldiers in his unit really don't anything about him either. All they hear is rumors about john miller in where he came from and what he is. But it’s all a bunch of lies.

In the film, he shows no passion and doesn’t share any opinions about anything. He’s a really complicated character to understand on what he is. In the beginning of the movie of the battle of Omaha beach, He’s meeting with gun fire, artillery barrages, and beach filled with dead soldiers who meet there end by machine gun fire. He fought off the temptation of cowering in fear behind a metal blockade and continued to push forward to his objective while leading his men up the beach and cliffs so they can use their weapons better. That scene shows that he has the ability to persevere and complete a mission in the midst of deadly chaos.

After the battle of Omaha, he’s given a mission to save one man named James Francis Ryan, from orders from the General. So during their travels of finding Ryan, John miller loses a solider from a little village and loses another soldier after raiding a German outpost. After capturing a German prisoner, Captain Miller forces him to dig Grave holes for his comrades and the German soldiers as well. Then as he was ready to move out, he had a choice to kill the German prisoner or let him go. He lets him go while his men are arguing why he let him go. So while his unit are arguing amongst themselves, He just decides to tell his men what he does for a living and where he lives. He’s a school teacher that teaches English Composition at Thomas albert Edison high school and was a coach of the baseball team in the spring. He live is a small called Alvid, Pennsylvania. He’s is married. After telling about his life, he says that he’s changed because of the war. He’s even worried that his wife won’t even recognize him when he comes back home. Not only just that he never wanted to talk about himself during a war because nobody care where you are from. People are just trying to survive the war and get back home to their families.

Then he says that he doesn’t know anything about Ryan and doesn’t care, it’s only just a name to him. So he decided to continue his mission only if it means that he can come back home to his wife then that’s his mission. After he finds Ryan, John miller and his men have to hold down the Rhine Bridge from a German assault. After leading his men to victory, Captain John miller dies from getting shot though the chest. But in the end, the men that john served with realized how strong of a leader he was, brave, and no matter how bad the situation was. John miller would do whatever it takes to complete his mission.
